For the Democrats, the time of cacophonous committee meetings has passed.

Having worked as a correspondent in New York from the Clinton presidency through the Obama years, I have kept American friends with whom I still stay in touch. From here in Europe, it is challenging to comprehend how American politics has reached its current state. A significant share of Republicans openly declare themselves ready to abandon democracy. At the same time, the Democrats cannot, by any means, get their ranks in order.
How on earth have the Democrats squandered their position when the opposition offers little more than the improvisations of one man’s narcissism? Donald Trump’s Republicans resemble a regiment marching behind a single drumbeat. The Democrats resemble, at best, a noisy flock of crows; plenty of sound, no clear direction.
